Day 17: June 2, 2016 - Even more press!!

Today was my last workshop with the women. We continued our discussion on sexual health from Monday, learning more about physiology and different methods of contraception. Before starting the lesson, however, I introduced the women to Angelica, who is a teacher at the language school Conexiones entre mundos and also the co-founder of an NGO called Serve Abroad, that works in the realms of education and culture. We (RB) are trying to think of ways to combine our efforts with Serve Abroad in the future. The women were very excited to meet Angelica, and I think they would be open to working with her in the future as well.

I started off the lesson by asking the women to draw pictures of the anatomy that they had learned from the last class. I was really happy with how they did; they pretty much drew everything I asked them to draw perfectly! I was very impressed, and also felt happy that they were retaining the knowledge that they learn.

Next we talked a bit about urinary tract infections. My main point was that it is easier for women to get UTIs than men because their urethras are shorter. Doña Emiliana understood right away; she mentioned that that’s why women should wipe towards the back, not the front. Wiping towards the front can lead to bacteria entering the urethra.

Afterwards, we talked about different types of contraception. I taught them the mechanism of action behind each method of contraception, including the cycle method. As an activity, I had each women make a calendar showing their different fertile and infertile periods.

Overall, I had a great time teaching the women. I think we all got a lot out of the workshops, and I really look forward to working with them in the future.

After the workshop, we had another interview with the TV station that filmed the show “Que no me pierda” that we were on the other night. Rodrigo said that we would be able to get a recording of this interview!
